Critical results and responsible communication
To enable laboratory professionals to identify a critical situation, carry out the technical checks within their responsibilities, then alert, pass on and trace the information according to established procedures.
A critical result calls for a fast, reliable and traceable response. This workshop trains participants to check, alert and document without exceeding their level of responsibility.
- recognise a result or situation that requires a rapid alert
- distinguish between a critical result, an inconsistent result, a questionable result and a technical anomaly
- check the patient’s identity, the specimen, the analytical run and previous results
- carry out the checks or repeats authorised by the procedure
- identify situations requiring the biologist’s immediate intervention
- prepare a clear, concise and complete handover
- check the identity and role of the recipient
- apply the escalation pathway when the contact cannot be reached
- trace the checks, the handover, its receipt and unsuccessful attempts
- preserve the confidentiality of the information communicated
