Workshop objectives

The essential groundwork: preparing the patient and the workstation, locating veins, choosing equipment, blood collection techniques, tube handling and biosafety. The procedure is adapted to children, older people, cachectic patients, patients who are overweight, and difficult veins. Day 3: practical work only.

1 Day 1 Understanding blood collection and preparing for the procedure

Understand the importance of specimen collection within the pre-analytical process, master the anatomical basis for locating veins, and correctly prepare the patient, the equipment and the collection station.

2 Day 2 Performing the collection and adapting to particular situations

Master the main blood collection techniques, adapt the procedure to patients with particular needs, and ensure both the safety and the immediate quality of the specimen.

No formal lecture is scheduled during this day. Participants are divided into small groups of three or four so that everyone takes an active part.
